October Hymn: "All the Way My Savior Leads Me"

Fanny Crosby was a prolific hymn writer, penning many favorites of congregations worldwide. Some of her most notable compositions include Blessed Assurance, Draw Me Nearer, Praise Him! Praise Him!, and To God Be the Glory. Evangelical tradition has been incredibly blessed because of her genuine faith and use of talent for the Lord’s glory. Not least among her popular hymns is All the Way My Savior Leads Me, our October hymn of the month.

This hymn is a great testimony of Crosby’s reliance on the Lord throughout her life. When she was six weeks old, Fanny developed an infection in her eyes, which called for medical attention. In the absence of the local doctor, her parents found a man who claimed to be a physician. While his treatment did eventually clear up the infection, it left Fanny with scars on her eyes and the inability to see.

Her blindness did not keep her from an exceptional childhood. Fanny memorized books of the Bible including the entire Pentateuch, the four Gospels, and Proverbs among other sections. She later would view her blindness as a gift from God, “believing He had given her a particular ‘soul-vision’ which equipped her for a special work.” Crosby trusted that God’s plan for her life was grand and her seemingly disastrous infection as a child turned out for her benefit and God’s glory.

All the Way My Savior Leads Me was written specifically after the provision of rent money when Fanny was unable to pay herself. One evening a stranger showed up on her doorstep, pressed a ten-dollar bill into her hand, and disappeared without saying a word. It was precisely the amount she needed. Fanny’s trust in the Lord to provide and gratitude for the perfection of His answering prayer is showcased in this lyric.

I am in love with the confidence that infuses this song! I am reminded that Jesus truly is enough for our needs in this life. As we repeat this song each week this month, let us dwell on the goodness of the Lord and His promise to be with us as we journey through joys and sorrows, defeat and triumph. Let us cling to the knowledge that “whatever befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.” May we see with renewed eyes that Jesus is leading us all the way!

All the Way My Savior Leads Me (No. 641 in The Worshiping Church)

All the way my Savior leads me; what have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His tender mercy, who through life has been my guide?
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort, here by faith in Him to dwell!
For I know, whatever befall me, Jesus doeth all things well;
For I know, whatever befall me, Jesus doeth all things well.

All the way my Savior leads me, cheers each winding path I tread,
gives me grace for every trial, feeds me with the living bread.
Though my weary steps may falter, and my soul athirst may be,
Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see;
Gushing from the Rock before me, Lo! a spring of joy I see.

All the way my Savior leads me, O, the fullness of His love!
Perfect rest to me is promised in my Father's house above.
When my spirit, clothed immortal, wings its flight to realms of day,
This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way;
This my song through endless ages: Jesus led me all the way.
